70th Anniversary of Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge

Diary: Monday 28th May 2007

Today I was planning on taking some night photographs of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. I spent some time during the day at some new locations for some photos during the day, but didn’t stay for the evening. Maybe later this week, time permitting. I found out tonight that it’s the 70th Anniversary of the Bridge. I also recently saw an excellent documentary about the building of the bridge, especially the advancements in building safety that were instigated.

Today’s photos Here. I’ve also found some of my older photos which I’ve uploaded as well.

Escaped Australian Fauna

Link to this post

Diary: Monday 28th May 2007

I was at the Palace of Fine Arts yesterday in San Francisco where I spotted what I was sure was not a native plant to the area.

From the ever reliable Wikipedia.

Bottlebrush (Callistemon) is a genus with 34 species of shrubs in the family Myrtaceae. The majority of Callistemon species are endemic to Australia; four species are also found in New Caledonia.

I’m not botanist, but these images look like Bottle Brush to me. Now how did they get here?

TV and Internet

Link to this post

I just saw a very cool commercial on TV, it made me laugh. So with the power of the Internet, a quick search later and you get to the press release. A little more then the ‘Maposaurus’ Super Bowl Spot on YouTube.

I wonder when ads will come with URL’s of replays and special extra content, like TV shows are doing now.

Cool Photo Printing Site

Link to this post

I just came across Moo as a link from Fotolog.

This site gives you the option to get a photo like card on the front, and text on the back. The interesting part is that you can do 100 different photos in the batch of 100, and it’s the size that grabs me. I’ve been looking for something different with my various sites including Admiring Creation and Heavy Horse Day and GeekErr. Just now trying to get all my photos ready for printing!

M&Ms in New York

Diary: Thursday 24th May 2007

M&Ms NY

I was the tour guide today for a work colleague visiting here in NY. Our tour started on 5th Avenue at 40th going past the NY Library, Rockerfeller, Saks 5th Avenue, all the way Central Park, through the park, to Columbus Circle, then down to Broadway to Time Square. After dinner we ended up in all places, a M&M store. I’ve actually been to a M&M Store in Las Vegas before, but it was still really cool. You can check out my M&Ms in NY photos of the store and some of the great shirt design which are very clever.

Men with machine guns

Link to this post

I’ve been working at eBay lately. This is an organization where security is important. You have to sign in, and have a visible pass when moving around, you are effectively escorted around within areas. You can’t enter any buildings without the security access given to employees. You need access also for example to access the onsite cafeteria.

This week, while at the cafeteria when my escort took a seat while I waited for my lunch selection being prepared, I struck up a conversation with another visitor (obvious due to the visitor badge). I was asking him about his Samsung Blackjack phone, something I’d initially considered until I’d realized it run on Windows Mobile. No way am I going to willingly sell my soul to use a Microsoft Product. Anyway an interesting conversation that confirmed all my fears about general slowness, slow boot up time, crashes and apparently very poor battery life. This guy was a little concerned he could not find his escort as she had gone to another counter for something else. So I said to him, “You need to make sure you don’t walk around outside by yourself otherwise the men with machine guns will come out from nowhere”.

I’m Australian, we are not a serious folk, we joke around, I was joking however I did say it seriously. I often like to say something in a conversion that is unexpected, because it’s a gauge as to how people respond. Anyway, he took a moment, he seemed concerned, then you would think after a second he would realize it was a joke, but he didn’t. He paused some more, seemingly more concerned until I fessed up and told him I was joking. His eBay escort shortly returned and I had the chance again to relay the experience quickly, all of us laughing about it.

I was mentioning it to my flatmates and I thought in summary — “His expression and pause was just priceless.”
